Strings

    1. One movement from a Bach unaccompanied Sonata or Partita

    2. Three orchestral excerpts (at least 20 seconds each) from the following symphonies: Mozart 35, 39, 40; Beethoven 3, 5, 7, 9; Brahms I, 2.

    3. A 2-octave scale and arpeggio in any key.

    1. One technical etude, such as Bochsa, Pozzoli, or Schmidt.

    2. One orchestral excerpt or cadenza (e.g., Tchaikovsky, cadenza from Nutcracker, Berlioz Symphony Fantastique.)

    3. Two contrasting solos.

    1. One movement from a Bach Suite or equivalent work from the time period.

    2. One prelude, sonata, or theme and variations from Sor, Giuliani, Ponce, Torroba, Turina, Villa-Lobos, Brouwer, or equivalent repertoire.

    3. One etude by Carcassi, Sor, Brouwer, or Villa-Lobos, or equivalent repertoire.

Winds

    1. Two contrasting (both in tempo and period) movements from standard works;

    2. Two contrasting (both in tempo and period) orchestral excerpts clearly labeled at least 30 seconds long each

    3. One movement from a work from the Impressionist or Modern periods.

    1. Two contrasting (in tempo) etudes from Barret or Ferling.

    2. Two contrasting orchestral excerpts (in tempo and time period) are clearly labeled, lasting at least 30 seconds each.

    3. Two solo selections that contrast in time period and tempo.

    1. Any two Rose studies or etudes contrasting in tempo

    2. Two of the three movements from Mozart’s concerto

    3. Two orchestral excerpts, clearly labeled, lasting at least 30 seconds each, contrasting tempo and time period

    1. TWO of the three movements of the Mozart concerto

    2. Two orchestral excerpts contrasting in tempo and time period are clearly labeled, lasting at least 30 seconds each.

    3. One major and one minor scale, two octaves.

    1. One etude from Charlier, Brandt, Arban, or equivalent

    1. One solo movement (can be accompanied) from a sonata or concerto

    2. Five standard orchestral excerpts, clearly labeled, lasting at least 20 seconds each

    3. Two-octave scale in any key.

    1. First movement from any Mozart concerto

    2. Three standard orchestral excerpts, clearly labeled and lasting at least 20 seconds each.

    3. Two octave scale in any key.

Composition

Composition auditions will consist of three submissions in pdf form of compositions lasting at least three minutes each. Only one of these may be an arrangement of an already existing tune or composition.

Voice

Vocal auditions have the following three components:

  1. One art song in any language.

  2. One aria in Italian

  3. One aria in either French or German (some other language may also be used, such as Czech or Russian).

Please note that musical theatre repertoire is not acceptable for this audition.

Piano

Piano auditions have the following four parts:

  1. Any fast movement (first or third) from a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert

  2. One solo from the Romantic period (e.g., Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt)

  3. One solo from Impressionist or Modern periods (e.g., Debussy, Ravel, Bartok, Prokofiev)

  4. Two-octave scales, hands together, in parallel motion. Must preform three different keys, one of which must be a minor key.

Percussion

Percussion auditions include the following 4 parts.

  1. One orchestral snare drum etude

  2. One timpani etude

  3. One 2-mallet marimba or xylophone solo

  4. One 4-mallet marimba solo.

Conducting

Conducting auditions will consist of 3 selections lasting at least four minutes each.

Each must be clearly labeled. Memorization is not required, nor is a live orchestra or choir, as long as the piece is clearly labeled, and a pdf of the music conducted is sent along with the links.

One of the three selections must be choral, and one instrumental, the latter of which must be conducted with a baton.
